Atlas, the humanoid robot that dazzled followers for more than a decade with its outdoor running, awkward dancing and acrobatic back flips, has powered down. On Wednesday, Boston Dynamics, the company that created it, announced the arrival of the next generation of humanoid robots — a fully electric robot (also named Atlas) for real-world commercial and industrial applications. For anyone worried about what would happen to the hydraulic bipedal machine (a robot home? A spokesman, Nikolas Noel, said that retirement would mean that the Atlas would move to its “robot retirement home,” which is to say that it would be “sitting in our office lobby museum” with other decommissioned robots. The old Atlas was used to research full-body mobility and to explore what was possible in robotics, Mr. Noel said.

“We’re trying to make robots that can operate in human spaces.”Do we even need humanoids? Seemingly farther along is Tesla's Austin, Texas-based neighbor Apptronik, which unveiled its Apollo humanoid in an August video demonstration. “That led to development of a new robot that was not really a humanoid, but had several characteristics of a humanoid,” he said via an emailed message. Walking is "not the hardest problem to solve in humanoid robotics," said Geordie Rose, co-founder and CEO of British Columbia, Canada-based startup Sanctuary AI. “Forever more, human- centric robots like that are going to be part of human life.

Boston Dynamics made its robot dogs speak using ChatGPT, and they all have different personalities. Thanks to the integration of OpenAI's ChatGPT, Boston Dynamics' robot dogs can now speak in full sentences, Fast Company reported back in May. And then there's the sarcastic, nihilistic personality that questions the "unfathomable void" of its existence, which Boston Dynamics has simply named "Josh." The New York Police Department announced earlier this year that it would begin using the Boston Dynamics robot dogs again. A group of researchers asked AI to design a walking robot. AdvertisementAdvertisementWhen a group of researchers asked an AI to design a robot that could walk, it created a "small, squishy and misshapen" thing that walks by spasming when filled with air. "We told the AI that we wanted a robot that could walk across land. The AI began with a small rubber block and modeled different shapes before arriving at the final design that could walk. HSBC identified key stocks in the supply chain that may benefit from Tesla's push into humanoid robots. Tesla launched its human-shaped robot, called "Tesla Bot," last September. But compared with its more seasoned counterpart, Boston Dynamics' Atlas, the Tesla Bot lacks advanced motion control capabilities, HSBC said. The table below shows the five buy-rated stocks expected to be in the supply chain for such robots, according to HSBC. These companies — Japan's Keyence, South Korea's LG Energy Solution, Chinese firms Inovance, Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL), and Zhejiang Sanhua — are involved in different aspects of the supply chain for humanoid robots, HSBC said.

Will general purpose AI — AI that is as capable as humans — eventually take over the world? CNN/Peg Skorpinski “…even though we may understand how to build perfectly safe general purpose AI, what’s to stop Dr. We don’t know if they reason; we don’t know if they have their own internal goals that they’ve learned or what they might be. It is not general purpose AI, but it’s giving people a taste of what it would be like. And so it turns out that you can actually build AI systems that have those properties, but they’re very different from the kinds of AI systems that we know how to build.

Boston Dynamic's robot dogs can now speak thanks to OpenAI's ChatGPT, Fast Company reported. Boston Dynamics' robotic dogs may not be able to bark — but they can speak in complete sentences, thanks to generative AI. Using Google Assistant's voice technology, ChatGPT gives the robot dogs the ability to understand and respond to humans face-to-face. When asked a question about the robot's tasks, ChatGPT can interpret it and formulate an answer by analyzing the robot's data, he said. A demonstration of these robot dogs shows they are are capable of answering verbal questions in a clear way.
The NYPD's robotic dogs are "out of the pound" again, mayor Eric Adams announced earlier this week. Adams announced during a press conference earlier this week that the city spent $750,000 on two robotic canines the NYPD calls "Digidogs. " He said the dogs can "save lives" in situations where "you can't have police officers going inside because it's dangerous." The announcement comes just two years after the NYPD halted an experiment with the robotic dogs. In addition to the robot dogs, the NYPD will begin testing the StarChase pilot, a device that shoots a GPS-tracker to a stolen car, and the K5 ASR, an outdoor security robot, Adams said during the press conference.
Researchers from MIT designed "DribbleBot," a robot that dribbles a soccer ball just like humans. Researchers from MIT's Improbable Artificial Intelligence Laboratory designed the robotic system, which can dribble a soccer ball across a range of surfaces. We need the machines to go over terrains that aren't flat, and wheeled robots can't traverse those landscapes." Four-legged robots designed by other companies, including Boston Dynamics, Ghost Robotics, and Anybotics, are also putting their robot-iterations to work, such as performing equipment inspection checks at companies. But advancements like MIT's show there's still progress being made toward the dream of competitive soccer robots.
Japanese tech firm Docomo showed off a small tea-making robot at MWC 2023. Japan's Docomo showed off a small tea-making robot at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this week that was more impressive for its ability to mimic humans than its physical prowess. Docomo's robot relied on the company's motion-sharing technology that enabled it to follow the actions of its human counterpart in real-time. The ability of the robot to mimic human actions could eventually boast an array of real-life use cases that could see menial and repetitive tasks automated. The tea-making robot is just one way in which Docomo demonstrated human augmentation at MWC.
The Swiss boarding school's director told Insider it is embracing AI tech like ChatGPT and DALL-E.She says banning ChatGPT is "mass hysteria," and students need to be taught the ethics of AI. The Swiss boarding school, which says it is "possibly" the world's costliest, requires a non-refundable fee of over $1,000 just to apply. Another student used DALL·E to generate pictures in an essay about the role of women in the First World War. The AI didn't score more than a C."I would say that if you're getting C level answers from ChatGPT, you're asking the wrong question," Gademann adds. "Can you imagine a scenario where we're throwing millions and millions of dollars to find out if a student used a calculator in math homework in the '80s?"
